A woman returning home with her husband's deceased body and an ambulance driver were killed in a head-on collision between their ambulance and a passenger bus in Narail on Wednesday morning. Four others were injured in the crash.
The accident occurred around 9:00 am near Badshah Garage on the Kalna-Narail-Jashore highway.
The deceased are Jahanara Begum, 45, of Mahidia village in Jashore, and the ambulance driver, Akbar Hossain, 32, of Purba Chakkalapota village in Lakshmipur.
According to police and local sources, Jahanara was transporting the body of her husband, Ismail Hossain, from Rajarbagh Police Hospital in Dhaka to their home in Jashore. As the ambulance reached Badshah Garage, it collided head-on with a passenger bus traveling in the opposite direction toward Kalna. Jahanara died at the scene.
Locals rescued the five injured passengers and took them to Narail District Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared the ambulance driver dead. The four surviving victims were transferred to Jashore Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ajay Kumar Kundu confirmed the incident.
"Police have recovered the bodies and sent them to the Narail Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy," the OC said. "Both vehicles have been seized. Traffic on the highway has returned to normal."
