The Election Commission (EC) issued a stern warning Saturday, stating that posting photos or videos of postal ballots on social media is a crime that could result in the suspension of a voter’s national identity card (NID).
In an official statement, the Commission emphasized that legal action will be taken against anyone violating the secrecy of the voting process. The warning comes as officials begin distributing postal ballots for the 13th parliamentary election, scheduled for Feb. 12, 2026.
While postal ballots are already reaching some voters, the EC clarified that actual voting cannot begin until Jan. 21, following the official allocation of election symbols. Completed ballots can be returned by post starting Jan. 22.
Voters are urged to return their ballots immediately after marking them. Any ballots received after the deadline will not be counted.
The ballot features 118 symbols for registered parties and independent candidates. The Awami League’s "boat" symbol will not appear. A "No" vote option is included on the ballot for the first time. Voters can view constituency-specific candidate lists on digital platforms before marking their physical ballot.
The EC has extended the registration deadline for postal voting to Jan. 5, 2026, to accommodate high demand. Voters at home and abroad can register via the "Postal Vote BD" app.
As of Jan. 3, more than 1.2 million voters have registered for the postal system, marking a significant shift toward digital electoral integration in Bangladesh.
