The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested Ataur Rahman Bikrampuri in Narsingdi following a formal requisition from the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP).
The arrest, carried out on Tuesday, was executed under the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs to maintain public safety and national law and order.
Following his detention, Bikrampuri was handed over to Tongi East Police Station and subsequently transferred to Kashimpur Central Jail-1 this morning, December 24. According to a Home Ministry notice, he is being held under Section 2(F) of the Special Powers Act, 1974. The order mandates his detention for a period of 90 days to prevent activities deemed harmful to public safety.
GMP Commissioner Md. Israil Howlader stated that Bikrampuri had repeatedly made "provocative statements." He gained notoriety for falsely claiming a Gazipur Imam had been abducted, which was later revealed to be a self-staged plot.
He reportedly led a mob that stormed Shahbagh Police Station to release a sexual harassment suspect and was involved in a similar forced release incident at a protest in front of the Prothom Alo office.
Followers of Bikrampuri claimed on social media that he was intercepted and taken from a bus while traveling from Bhairab. While police have confirmed the arrest, they have not officially verified the specific details of the highway interception described by his supporters.
Security has been tightened around Kashimpur Central Jail following the arrival of Bikrampuri. Intelligence agencies are currently monitoring social media platforms to prevent the escalation of provocative content by his followers, as the 90-day detention period officially commenced today.
