Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain confirmed today, November 26, 2025, that Bangladesh has formally sent a request to India seeking the extradition of the convicted deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The request was made through a note verbale (official diplomatic communication) to India's Ministry of External Affairs via the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.
This latest request follows the November 17 verdict by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), which sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July–August mass uprising last year.
The Adviser confirmed that Bangladesh's request has been placed under the existing extradition treaty between the two neighbouring countries.
Hossain stated that while an answer is not expected within a week of the submission, Dhaka is confident it will eventually receive a reply from New Delhi. The Adviser noted that the current situation is different from Bangladesh's previous, unanswered request because the judicial process has now been completed, and Sheikh Hasina has been formally convicted.
The ICT-1 also sentenced former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as a state witness, to five years in prison in the same case. The move underscores the interim government's push to secure the return of the fugitive convicts following the conclusion of the trial.
