Five more children have died in Bangladesh after developing symptoms of measles. Three of the deaths were recorded in the Dhaka Division and two in the Sylhet Division.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 1,031 new cases of measles and measles-like symptoms were reported in the past 24 hours.
The latest figures were published in the DGHS's regular measles update on Thursday (August 27).
From March 15 through August 27, the total number of deaths associated with measles and its symptoms has risen to 955. Of these, 856 deaths involved patients with measles symptoms, while 99 were laboratory-confirmed measles deaths.
During the past 24 hours, 75 people were newly diagnosed with measles, while another 956 people developed measles-like symptoms. Since March 15, the country has recorded 18,726 confirmed measles cases and 153,692 cases with symptoms.
So far, 134,437 people have been hospitalized with measles or measles-like symptoms since March 15. Of them, 129,489 patients have recovered and been discharged.
Health experts say that increasing awareness—particularly among children and people at higher health risk—and ensuring timely vaccination could help bring the situation under control quickly.
