The death toll from devastating flash floods and landslides along the Nepal-China border has risen to 273, with at least 270 people killed in Nepal and another three deaths reported in Tibet, China.
The updated figures were reported on Thursday (August 27), citing Nepal Police and Chinese state media.
Around 1,500 people, including more than 750 foreign tourists and pilgrims, are reportedly missing. The disaster occurred after a massive landslide of mud and rocks blocked a Himalayan river, triggering sudden flooding that swept away homes, roads and other infrastructure.
The flooding has also completely destroyed the main road connecting Kathmandu with Lhasa.
Nepali and Chinese authorities, along with international relief agencies, have stepped up rescue and emergency response operations in the affected areas.
The casualty and missing-person figures may change as rescue teams reach more remote areas and authorities gather additional information.
