Police investigating the murder of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three family members in Rangpur are seeking court permission to conduct DNA and drug tests on the two arrested suspects Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the suspects gave new details in court statements under Section 164 describing yaba use, hiding on the rooftop of Ganapati's home and killing family members after confronting the retired teacher. Investigators are now comparing these accounts with post-mortem and forensic findings.
According to police, all four victims Ganapati 60, his wife Pritilata 50, daughter Agami 25 and son Ayush 12 died from strangulation. No evidence of rape was found involving Pritilata or Agami.
Police said the suspects with high on yaba and killed Ganapati after he discovered them on the roof with fearing he would alert neighbors. They then killed his wife and daughter after the women came to investigate the noise. The suspects reportedly found young Ayush awake and killed him too after he recognized Siddhartha by name contradicting earlier reports that the boy had been asleep.
The pair allegedly staged the scene to resemble a robbery also taking jewelry and Tk.15,000 in cash before fleeing. Siddhartha reportedly buried the stolen jewelry behind a nearby house whose residents were unaware of it.
Investigators are also trying to arrest a man named Shanto identified by the suspects as their drug supplier with whom they had left a mobile phone as collateral.
The case has been transferred to the Detective Branch now led by Inspector Jinnat Ali as police continue examining whether others were involved.
