Global pop icon and veteran romantic-comedy actress Jennifer Lopez is set to return to her signature genre this summer with Netflix’s highly anticipated film, Office Romance. Scheduled for an international streaming release on June 5, 2026, the project marks a sharp shift back to lighthearted, workplace storytelling for Lopez following her recent deviations into intense action thrillers and science fiction.
The film pairs the Hollywood heavyweight with Ted Lasso breakout star Brett Goldstein, building a classic corporate forbidden-love narrative with a distinctly modern, raunchy edge.
A High-Flying Corporate Conflict
In Office Romance, Lopez portrays Jackie Cruz, the rigorous, high-powered CEO and pilot of an airline named Air Cruz. Known for maintaining an iron-clad grip on her business operations, Jackie enforces a strict anti-fraternization policy across her entire corporate structure.
The corporate machinery encounters turbulence when Daniel Blanchflower (played by Brett Goldstein), an ambitious new corporate attorney, joins the legal team. The two self-professed workaholics find an immediate, undeniable chemistry that forces them to reconsider their career-first priorities.
However, the blossoming workplace affair carries massive stakes. Because of Jackie’s strict HR guidelines and a looming executive leadership meeting that threatens to reshape the airlines' power structure, any public exposure of their relationship puts her career in serious jeopardy.
The Minds Behind the Screenplay
The film is directed by Ol Parker, a seasoned filmmaker well-versed in glossier, star-studded crowd-pleasers. Parker previously directed the hit musical Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and the 2022 romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise, which starred Julia Roberts and George Clooney.
The script was penned by Goldstein alongside Joe Kelly, his creative partner who previously co-wrote the critically acclaimed Ted Lasso episode "Beard After Hours." Speaking to People magazine about the inception of the screenplay, Goldstein admitted that the script was written specifically with Lopez in mind during a long train journey.
"It's easy to write a rom-com when you have JLo in mind," Goldstein remarked. "She's the best at this stuff. We just wanted to write something funny and smart enough to be worthy of her saying yes."
Director Ol Parker shared his optimism regarding the natural dynamic between his two leads, noting that their off-screen compatibility blossomed instantly during pre-production lunches and sustained the production through principal photography in New Jersey.
Star-Studded Ensemble and Nostalgic Reunions
Beyond its central pairing, Office Romance features a robust supporting cast, including Emmy-nominee Betty Gilpin (GLOW), Amy Sedaris (The Mandalorian), Tony Hale (Veep), and Oscar-nominee Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid's Tale).
Notably, the film serves as a major cinematic reunion for Lopez and veteran actor Edward James Olmos. Olmos portrays Captain Jack Cruz, Jackie's on-screen father—marking the first time the duo has played a father-daughter pair since starring together in the iconic 1997 biographical drama Selena nearly three decades ago.
Genre Reset for Lopez
The release of Office Romance marks a deliberate return to territory Lopez helped define in the late 1990s and early 2000s with classics like The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan.
While her recent Netflix collaborations leaned heavily into dark, high-stakes action—such as the action-thriller The Mother (2023) and the sci-fi feature Atlas (2024)—this upcoming release delivers a more adult, sharp-witted workplace comedy aimed squarely at summer audiences.
