Arnold Schwarzenegger, 78, is set to reprise his iconic role as Conan the Barbarian in a third film, 44 years after the original 1982 release. The announcement was made at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio.
Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the last four Mission: Impossible movies, has been hired to write and direct the new film, titled King Conan. Schwarzenegger said the story will reflect Conan’s age, portraying him as a seasoned king facing new challenges, magic, and battles, while still showcasing action and adventure.
The original Conan the Barbarian (1982) and its sequel, Conan the Destroyer (1984), made Schwarzenegger a global star. Plans for a third film began in the 1980s but stalled due to scheduling conflicts and development issues. Past attempts, including The Legend of Conan, failed to materialize.
Schwarzenegger also revealed that he is returning to other classic roles, including Predator and Commando, alongside projects like Kung Fury 2 and The Man With the Bag. He emphasized that modern technology and special effects will enhance these films, making them bigger and more spectacular.
