The historic Deputy Commissioner (DC) Gold Cup Football Tournament is returning to Tangail after an 11-year hiatus, introducing a fresh ‘home and away’ league format.
The tournament kicks off this Saturday (July 11) at 3:00 PM at Tangail Stadium, featuring teams from 12 upazilas. To elevate the competitive standard, each team is permitted to field up to five foreign guest players.
The opening day features six matches across various venues. In the first leg, Tangail Sadar will face Basail Upazila at Tangail Stadium. Concurrently, Madhupur will play Ghatail, Dhanbari will challenge Gopalpur, Kalihati faces Bhuiyanpur, Delduar meets Nagarpur, and Mirzapur takes on Sakhipur at their respective upazila venues. The second-leg matches will take place on Monday (July 13), switching to the opponents' home grounds.
Following the group stage, the Super Six round will run from July 15 to 19 at Tangail Stadium. The semi-finals are scheduled for July 28 and 29, leading up to the grand finale on August 1 at the same venue.
Initiated in 1980 by the then Deputy Commissioner Md. Rezaul Islam, the tournament famously drew top national clubs like Mohammedan and Abahani, drawing massive crowds. The tournament was last held in 2015, where Tangail Youth Club emerged as champions and BJMC finished as runners-up. The revival aims to restore Tangail's rich football heritage.
