To strengthen disaster preparedness and reduce the risk of lightning strikes, the non-governmental organization Efforts for Rural Advancement (ERA) organized an education and experience exchange meeting in Sunamganj on Tuesday morning.
The event, held at the Deputy Commissioner’s conference room, was part of ERA's "LITE" project, funded by Plan International Bangladesh. It brought together 50 participants, including teachers, youth volunteers, local government representatives, and community stakeholders.
Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Minhazur Rahman addressed the meeting as the chief guest. He urged everyone to work collectively to build public awareness about lightning strikes, a major safety concern in the region.
“Awareness activities must be expanded and strengthened to minimize casualties and reduce the risks associated with lightning,” the Deputy Commissioner emphasized.
The meeting highlighted the LITE project's core contributions to the region, which include improving early warning systems, mitigating lightning risks, and developing women and youth leadership.
Hasina Begum, a youth volunteer and teacher from Somuj Ali School and College, shared insights into the positive community changes and learning experiences fostered by the project.
ERA Executive Director Fahmida Akhtar delivered the welcome address, while Program Director Md. Kamruzzaman moderated the session. Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md. Matiur Rahman and Plan International Bangladesh’s Advisor for Humanitarian Affairs Mohammad Sazed attended as special guests.
The session concluded with remarks from visiting Nepali participants, as well as ERA’s public health, project coordination, and monitoring officers.
