Iran was came back to draw 2-2 with New Zealand in their World Cup opener in Inglewood, California, on Monday.

Iran’s national football team was abruptly ordered to leave the United States and return to their training base in Mexico immediately after their World Cup opening match on Monday.

Following a thrilling 2-2 draw against New Zealand at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the Iranian squad had planned to stay overnight for a routine recovery session. Instead, head coach Amir Ghalenoei revealed they were instructed right after the game to depart immediately for Tijuana.

Deeply frustrated by the sudden change, Ghalenoei called his squad the "most oppressed team in the whole World Cup". He emphasized that the continuous cross-border commuting deprived the players of essential physical recovery time. Iran captain Mehdi Taremi confirmed that FIFA President Gianni Infantino visited their locker room post-match but stressed that the team desperately needs more tangible administrative support from the governing body.

These logistical nightmares reflect broader geopolitical complexities. The World Cup match took place just as an over 100-day war between the US and Iran nears a highly anticipated peace deal expected later this week. Political friction and visa issues had already forced the Iranian team to relocate their base camp from Arizona to Mexico weeks prior to the tournament. Furthermore, the president of Iran's football federation, Mehdi Taj alongside several support staff members were entirely barred from entering the US.

Despite the administrative chaos and political tension, the team experienced immense support on the pitch. Over 70,000 fans heavily composed of the large Iranian diaspora in Los Angeles cheered the team on. While there were audible jeers during the Iranian national anthem, fans later proudly displayed pre-revolutionary lion-and-sun flags in the stands to celebrate Iran's goals, successfully defying a stadium ban upheld by FIFA earlier that morning.

With all four teams in Group G currently tied at one point apiece, Iran must quickly pivot their focus. They are scheduled to face European heavyweights Belgium in their next match on Sunday.
