A 35-year-old Kuwait returnee was found dead by suicide at his home in Sonaimuri, Noakhali, on Tuesday (June 16) morning. Relatives allege he took his own life due to severe mental distress after his wife eloped with his distant nephew.
The deceased, Anwar Hossain, was the son of Mofiz Uddin from the Keramat Ali Bepari residence in Dakshin Shaktala village. He had worked in Kuwait raising sheep for the past nine years. During his time abroad, he sent his earnings to his wife, Aklima Akhter (34), who reportedly used the funds to purchase land in her own name.
According to locals, Aklima—a mother of two—left home six months ago with cash and gold ornaments to marry her husband's distant nephew, who coincidentally is also named Anwar.
The deceased Anwar returned to Bangladesh approximately 10 days ago. Relatives say he repeatedly tried to contact Aklima to bring her back for the sake of their two young sons, but she eventually cut off all communication.
Family members claim the situation escalated when Aklima sent Anwar a divorce notice last Saturday. Devastated by the betrayal and the official notice, Anwar suffered an emotional breakdown and chose to end his life on Tuesday. His family is now demanding exemplary punishment for Aklima.
Sonaimuri Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Kabir Hossain confirmed the incident. "Upon receiving the information, police recovered the body and sent it to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital morgue for an autopsy," he stated.
The OC added that while the police are aware of the family's allegations, no formal written complaint has been filed yet. Legal action will proceed once a formal complaint is received.
