Four members of a family suffered severe burn injuries on Thursday morning after a fire broke out from a leaky gas cylinder at a rented house in Bandar upazila, Narayanganj.
The incident took place around 6:00 AM in the Chanpur area of Madanpur union. The victims—a man, his wife, and their two children—were rushed to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka. Their names could not be verified immediately.
According to local residents, the family had moved into the house, owned by one Akhter Uddin, as tenants just 10 days ago. The fire erupted instantly when a family member struck a match to light the kitchen stove, igniting gas that had accumulated in the room overnight.
Confirming the incident, Bandar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Moktar Ashraf Uddin stated that the family relied on bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for cooking.
"The accumulated gas caught fire the moment a matchstick was struck. All four family members inside the house were burnt within seconds," the OC said. He added that locals rescued them swiftly and sent them to Dhaka. While doctors have described their injuries as serious, they are currently reported to be out of danger.
