Angry depositors locked the branches of five merged banks in Agrabad, Chattogram’s commercial hub, on Monday morning.
Around 11:00 am, hundreds of depositors marched through the streets before locking the gates of Exim Bank, Union Bank, and First Security Islami Bank PLC.
Protesters chanted slogans demanding the return of their savings, specifically voicing opposition to "haircuts"—a term referring to potential losses on their total deposit value following the mergers. Slogans included, "My money is in the bank, why am I on the street?" and "We won't accept deposit haircuts."
The demonstration remained under heavy police surveillance to prevent violence.
"I do not accept any deduction from my savings. Just return our money," said Joya Chowdhury, a depositor at Global Islami Bank’s Jubilee Road branch.
Md. Jasim Uddin, a retired officer who deposited approximately BDT 1 crore with First Security Islami Bank, expressed his desperation: "I have become a beggar on the streets."
Protesters stated they have already submitted memorandums to various government authorities. They warned that if their demands are not met, they will launch larger-scale programs following the branch lockdowns.
