The Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Gazipur, has officially inaugurated the country’s first Artificial Intelligence and Education Policy Lab. Established under the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, the facility aims to modernize the national education framework through advanced technology.
DUET Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Mohammad Joynal Abedin, inaugurated the lab as the chief guest at the university's Central Library on Tuesday. Speaking at the event, he emphasized that AI is no longer just a tool but a transformative force redefining teaching, research, and assessment.
"We are on the verge of the Fifth Industrial Revolution," Professor Abedin stated. "To meet global education goals, we must integrate AI into our curriculum and administration. This lab will help make our education system more dynamic and of international standard."
The Vice-Chancellor also noted that the lab is a result of the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project, funded by the World Bank and supervised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh. He praised the transparency and technical excellence of the DUET faculty in implementing the project.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Arefin Kawsar, attending as a special guest, added that the lab would play a pivotal role in engineering and technology policy-making. The event was presided over by HEAT Sub-Project Manager Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman Farhad, with senior deans and department heads in attendance.
As the first of its kind in Bangladesh, the lab is tasked with formulating policies to align the country’s technical education with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government’s long-term vision for technological reform.
