Former Member of Parliament Saleh Uddin Ahmed Helal called on journalists to act as the nation’s conscience by fearlessly reporting the truth. Speaking at an Iftar program on Saturday evening, he emphasized that professional unity is the strongest shield for media workers.
“White must be called white, and black must be called black,” Helal said. Addressing the gathering at Tushbhandar Women's Degree College, he urged journalists to remain steadfast in their commitment to accuracy and to avoid the influence of dishonest actors.
Reflecting on past challenges, the former MP noted that while the media faced significant repression under previous administrations, the current environment offers a new opportunity for disciplined, truth-based journalism. “The days of corruption and lawlessness are over. Do not let your pens stop highlighting the truth,” he added.
The event was organized by Press Five, a collective representing journalists from all five upazilas of the district.
The program was chaired by Press Five founder Altafur Rahman and moderated by Channel 24 Rangpur Bureau Chief Fakhrul Shahin and Maasranga Television’s Fuad Hasan. Notable attendees included Press Five advisors Rezaul Karim Manik and Mehedi Hasan Jewel, along with several local media leaders and dignitaries.
