The Paikgachha branch of ‘Youth for the Sundarbans’ organized an extensive program on Wednesday (February 25) to mark Sundarbans Day 2026. The event aimed to raise awareness about the preservation of the world’s largest mangrove forest through campaigns, hand painting, and the distribution of eco-friendly materials.
The organization’s president, Md. Rakibul Islam, and member A. Samad presented eco-friendly bags—carrying messages on forest protection—to the newly elected MP of Khulna-06, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Bags were also presented to Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Fazle Rabbi, and Paikgachha Government College Principal Professor Samaresh Roy. During the presentation, officials emphasized that protecting the Sundarbans requires a unified effort between the administration and the public.
To promote environmental conservation, members displayed cloth festoons at key locations across the upazila square and municipality. In a practical move against plastic pollution, youth volunteers distributed handmade paper bags to local grocery stores as an alternative to polythene. Leaflets highlighting the forest's role in climate regulation and coastal protection were also distributed.
During a human chain held at the Upazila Parishad gate, speakers highlighted the Sundarbans' immense contribution to Bangladesh’s environment and economy. They called for stricter measures against deforestation and pollution while reiterating the demand to observe Sundarbans Day nationally.
The proactive initiative by the local youth received a positive response from the community, with the organization pledging to continue its efforts to safeguard the region's greenery.
