Belgium defeated Senegal 3-2 in a dramatic 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match in Seattle on Wednesday, coming from two goals down to win on a last-minute VAR-awarded controversial penalty in extra time.
Senegal looked in control for most of the game. Habib Diarra put them ahead in the 25th minute after Ismaila Sarr's header struck the post and fell to him.
Sarr then doubled the lead in the 51st minute controlling a long pass from Moussa Niakhate on his chest before firing past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Belgium seemed headed for elimination until a late surge. Romelu Lukaku, introduced at halftime scored in the 86th minute and captain Youri Tielemans headed home an equalizer three minutes later to force extra time.
With the match seemingly bound for penalties, referee Said Martinez awarded Belgium a spot kick in the 125th minute after review, ruling that Senegal's Lamine Camara had fouled Tielemans inside the box. Tielemans converted calmly sealing a stunning comeback and denying Senegal what many felt was a deserved win.
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw said his team had done enough to win but ultimately fell short. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia acknowledged Senegal's quality but said he was glad his side advanced.
