The "Starboy" has returned to center stage exactly when Arsenal needed him most. With the pressure of the Premier League title race reaching a boiling point, Bukayo Saka provided the spark in a dominant 3-0 win over Fulham on Saturday.
Saka’s partnership with Viktor Gyökeres revitalized an attack that had looked sluggish in recent months. Arsenal traded their recent caution for pace and precision, leaving a virus-hit Fulham side with no answers at the Emirates Stadium.
In his first start since the Carabao Cup Final following an Achilles injury, the 24-year-old took only nine minutes to make his mark. Saka's explosive change of pace set up Gyökeres for the opener before he doubled the lead himself in the 40th minute with a clinical finish past Bernd Leno.
By the time Gyökeres added a third in first-half stoppage time, manager Mikel Arteta had seen enough to feel confident. With a massive Champions League semifinal second leg against Atletico Madrid looming on Tuesday, Saka was rested at halftime.
This was arguably Arsenal’s most fluid performance of the season. Arsenal recorded a non-penalty expected goals (xG) figure of 2.39 in the first half—their highest of the season. Their 87% pass accuracy into the final third was a season-best.
Arsenal’s win percentage jumps from 50% to 74% when Saka is in the starting lineup.
"We had some fresh legs... individual performance increased, and then the team flowed in a different way," Arteta noted post-match.
With an eye on Europe, Arteta made five changes to his lineup—the most in a league game this season. Youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly excelled in his first midfield start, providing the energy needed to dominate the center of the pitch.
The gamble paid off. Arsenal now hold a six-point lead over Manchester City, though City retain two games in hand. More importantly, the Gunners look like a team ready to sprint through the finish line rather than limp toward it.
"He’s [Saka] come back in the most important period of the season," said Arteta. "His hunger is at the highest possible height and that’s a big platform for Tuesday".
