


Buddha Purnima, the largest religious festival of the Buddhist community, will be celebrated across Bangladesh tomorrow with traditional enthusiasm and religious fervor.
The day commemorates the three most significant events in the life of Gautama Buddha: his birth, his attainment of supreme enlightenment, and his great passing (Nirvana). Recognized internationally as Vesak Day, the occasion is a public holiday in Bangladesh.
Nationwide Celebrations
The festivities will begin at dawn with the hoisting of national and religious flags atop monasteries and the chanting of sacred verses from the Tripitaka.
Throughout the day, devotees will visit monasteries to offer fruits, flowers, and candles to statues of Lord Buddha. The day’s programs will start with Group meditation and religious discussions. Humanitarian Acts like Blood donation drives and feeding the destitute and offerings of Pindadana (offering food) to monks, Releasing sky lanterns in the evening.
Major Events in the Capital
In Dhaka, the Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha will lead a colorful "Peace Procession" from the Dharmarajika Buddhist Monastery in Sabujbagh.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Buddhist Federation (BBF) has organized a daylong program at the International Buddhist Monastery in Merul Badda. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is expected to attend a discussion meeting at the venue.
Regional Observances
Beyond the capital, major celebrations are planned in Buddhist-populated regions, including the Hill Tracts (Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari), Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Cumilla, and Patuakhali.
National dailies will publish special supplements, while state-run and private television and radio stations will broadcast special programs highlighting Buddha’s message of peace and humanity.
