Customs and intelligence officials recovered 2.16 kg of smuggled gold worth approximately Tk 3.56 crore from a passenger arriving from Dubai at Chittagong’s Shah Amanat International Airport on Monday morning.
The passenger, Mohammad Shahidul Alam Chowdhury of Mirsarai Upazila, arrived on a FlyDubai flight at 9:40 a.m. Acting on a tip-off, members of the National Security Intelligence (NSI) and the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) intercepted him as he attempted to pass through the customs' green channel.
Airport Public Relations Officer Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed that a physical search yielded melted gold and ornaments deliberately concealed inside the passenger's underwear and pajama belt.
The seized gold is currently being transferred to airport customs. Authorities confirmed that preparations are underway to file a criminal case against Chowdhury for smuggling.
Airport officials emphasized that a joint task force—comprising the NSI, DGFI, Customs Intelligence, and the Civil Aviation Authority—has significantly intensified surveillance to crack down on the illegal movement of gold and foreign currency through Chittagong.
