Customs authorities at Chattogram's Shah Amanat International Airport have detained a passenger arriving from Muscat after recovering 534 grams of concealed gold from his luggage.
The seizure took place on Friday morning. The passenger identified as Mohammad Hasan Murad from Chattogram's Rauzan upazila arrived on Salam Air flight OV-401.
Airport Public Relations Officer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil reported that Murad’s suspicious behavior while exiting the customs hall prompted officials to manually search his bags. During the inspection authorities discovered the gold cleverly hidden inside the luggage using a sophisticated concealment technique.
The recovered haul includes 425 grams of gold bars, 106 grams of jewelry and 3 grams of gold paste. Officials estimate the taxable value of the seized precious metal at approximately Tk.1.17 crore.
The confiscated gold has been transferred to Airport Customs, and the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate has initiated legal proceedings against the detainee.
In a statement the airport authorities emphasized that combined security teams Customs Intelligence and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will maintain strict with ongoing surveillance to crack down on gold smuggling and foreign currency laundering through the nation's airports.
