Passenger Detained with Tk 2.86 Crore Smuggled Gold at Chattogram Airport

A joint intelligence team detained a passenger carrying approximately 1.5 kilograms of smuggled gold at Chattogram’s Shah Amanat International Airport on Monday August 3.

The passenger identified as Mohammad Tushar from Cumilla’s Sadar Upazila arrived on Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG-148 from Dubai.

Acting on intelligence officials from the National Security Intelligence (NSI) Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) and Customs Intelligence intercepted Tushar. Upon searching him they recovered gold paste and powder specially concealed inside his undergarments.

Airport Public Relations Officer Engineer Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil confirmed the incident. "We recovered roughly 1,500 grams of gold in paste and powder form," Khalil stated. "A professional goldsmith is currently extracting and weighing the material to determine the exact quantity of pure gold."

Authorities estimate the recovered gold is worth around Tk 2.86 crore based on the gross weight. Once the final weight is confirmed the contraband will be officially handed over to airport customs.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the detained passenger for alleged gold smuggling.
