The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) has arrested four individuals, including the prime suspect, in connection with the murder of Md. Rifat in Chittagong. The arrests come 23 days after the violent incident in the Pahartali police station area.
According to a RAB press release issued on Monday, July 13, the arrestees include mastermind Md. Shamim (35), Sajjad Alam Shuvo (32), Maruf (27), and Suman (30).
Rifat, a 28-year-old electrician, was killed over a reported dispute regarding local dominance. RAB stated that on the morning of June 23, Sajjad lured Rifat from his home. Waiting accomplices, led by Shamim, then ambushed Rifat in the Dakshin Kattali area. During the coordinated assault, Shamim allegedly stabbed Rifat in the left knee with a sharp weapon, causing massive blood loss.
Locals rushed Rifat to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Following a murder case filed by the victim’s brother on June 24, RAB intensified its intelligence surveillance. On Sunday, July 12, a raid in Sitakunda’s Jalil Textile Bazar led to the capture of Shamim and Sajjad. Based on their confessions, RAB conducted follow-up raids later that afternoon, apprehending Maruf in Baluchhara and Suman in Halishahar.
RAB-7 Assistant Director (Media) A. R. M. Mozaffar Hossain confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects are being handed over to law enforcement for further legal proceedings.
