A Tangail court has sentenced a 48-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for circulating counterfeit currency under the Special Powers Act.
On Monday (July 13), Judge Md. Hafizur Rahman of the Tangail Special Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict against Waz Uddin, a resident of Fatepur village in Mirzapur upazila. The court also fined him Tk 50,000; failure to pay will result in an additional year in prison.
According to Public Prosecutor Advocate Md. Shafiqul Islam Ripon, the incident occurred on June 27, 2021. Waz Uddin attempted to purchase soft drinks at a local shop in Delduar using a fake Tk 1,000 note. Suspecting the note was forged, shopkeeper Joyen Uddin and local bystanders detained him and notified the authorities.
Police promptly arrested Waz Uddin and recovered four additional counterfeit Tk 1,000 notes from his possession. Following the arrest, the shopkeeper filed a case at the Delduar Police Station.
Following a thorough investigation, police submitted the charge sheet on March 2, 2022.
Waz Uddin was present in the crowded courtroom during the pronouncement of the verdict and was subsequently transferred to Tangail District Jail. Advocate Md. Kamruzzaman Tarafdar represented the defense during the trial.
