Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) Chief Organizer Nasiruddin Patwari was attacked and pelted with eggs following Jum’ah prayers in Jhenaidah on Friday (May 22). Three people were injured in the ensuing clash, sparking a heated dispute between the NCP and the student political wing, Chhatra Dal.
The incident occurred outside the old Collectorate Mosque in the DC Court area. According to local journalists and eyewitnesses, tension had been brewing between supporters of the two factions before the prayers began.
As Patwari left the mosque, an agitated crowd confronted him. Assailants threw eggs and bricks, with reports indicating some attackers wielded hockey sticks and iron rods. The confrontation quickly escalated into a chase and counter-chase, causing panic among ordinary worshippers and bystanders. Videos of the incident rapidly circulated on social media.
Patwari squarely blamed Islamic University Chhatra Dal Convener Shahed Ahmed for leading the ambush. Fellow NCP leader Sarjis Alam echoed the allegations in a Facebook post, claiming it was a premeditated attack. Later, Patwari also made an unverified claim that the assault was carried out "on the orders of the Law Minister."
"We were attacked right after leaving the mosque," said NCP joint member secretary Tarek Reza. "If we are not safe in a mosque, who is the country safe from?"
Chhatra Dal leadership firmly denied any involvement. Shahed Ahmed stated he was merely conversing with Patwari at the mosque gates when angry "ordinary students," provoked by Patwari's recent public remarks against top BNP leaders, spontaneously began throwing eggs. District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Shahriar Russell also categorically rejected claims of his party's involvement.
Following the clash, Patwari and local NCP leaders took shelter at the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station. Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Asaduzzaman confirmed that at least three people were injured but assured the public that the situation in the city is now under control.
Police have received a verbal complaint from the NCP leaders and stated that formal legal action will be taken as soon as a written case is filed.
