In a major political shift ahead of the 13th National Election, Rashed Khan, the General Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has officially joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The formal induction took place on Saturday at the BNP Chairperson’s Gulshan office, where Khan presented a bouquet to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Following his joining, the BNP leadership confirmed Rashed Khan as the party's candidate for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency (Jhenaidah Sadar and Kaliganj) under the "sheaf of paddy" symbol. Mirza Fakhrul urged local activists to unite behind Khan to ensure a victory in the upcoming polls scheduled for February 12.
Rashed Khan, a prominent face of the quota reform movement and the July Uprising, cited the leadership of Tarique Rahman as a primary motivation for his move, expressing his commitment to building a "New Bangladesh" through reform and justice.
The event also marked a broader consolidation of opposition forces. Several other veteran leaders and parties have dissolved their identities to merge with the BNP.
Redwan Ahmed: The LDP Secretary General resigned to join BNP and will contest from Cumilla-7.
Shahadat Hossain Selim: The LDP Chairman dissolved his faction to join BNP, securing a nomination for Lakshmipur-1.
Syed Ehsanul Huda: The Bangladesh Jatiya Dal chief dissolved his party to join the BNP ranks, standing for Kishoreganj-5.
The mass joining of leaders like Rashed Khan and Redwan Ahmed signals a strategic consolidation by the BNP to strengthen its grassroots presence and electoral prospects for the February 12 polls. This move effectively diminishes the influence of smaller allied parties while bolstering the BNP's "sheaf of paddy" front.
