Tensions have gripped Jhenaidah following an attack on Jatiya Nagarik Party (NCP) Chief Organizer Nasir Uddin Patwary. After being pelted with eggs and assaulted outside a mosque on Friday (May 22), Patwary and his supporters launched a sit-in outside the Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station, alleging police deliberately delayed registering their case.
The incident occurred right after Jum'ah prayers in front of the old Collectorate Mosque. Eyewitnesses report that Shahed Ahmed, Convener of the Islami University Chhatra Dal, approached Patwary as he was leaving. During their conversation, several youths threw eggs at Patwary from behind the Chhatra Dal leader. The provocation quickly escalated into a physical clash, leaving several local NCP workers injured.
Seeking legal recourse, Patwary went to the Sadar Police Station, where he waited from noon until 7:00 pm. Joined outside by activists from the NCP, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and Jamaat-Shibir, Patwary initiated a sit-in protest when police allegedly refused to accept his written complaint.
Patwary accused the Law Minister and Jhenaidah BNP President Abdul Majid of orchestrating the attack. Demanding the minister’s immediate resignation, he told reporters, "We were attacked with weapons. If this is the law and order situation in the Law Minister's own area, he has no right to hold office."
Chhatra Dal leadership has strongly denied any involvement. Shahed Ahmed stated he only approached Patwary to request he stop making derogatory public remarks about senior BNP leaders, claiming agitated "locals" threw the eggs.
To protest the allegations against them, Jhenaidah District Chhatra Dal leaders held a rally at the city's Shaheed Minar around 5:00 pm. Student leaders condemned the attack, rejected the blame, and demanded an impartial investigation to identify the real culprits.
Meanwhile, Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Asaduzzaman assured the public that the city's situation is under control, with additional police deployed at key points. Regarding the delayed case filing, the OC claimed a technical issue was to blame.
"The national server is currently down, which is why we cannot log the complaint online yet," he said, assuring that the case would be officially registered as soon as the system is restored.
