Leaders and activists of the National Citizens Party (NCP) staged a protest in front of the Parliament building on Thursday, demanding the impeachment of the President and constitutional reforms.
The demonstration took place on Manik Mia Avenue in the morning as the first session of the new Parliament began.
The protest was led by NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan. Activists stood at the entrance of the Parliament complex holding placards outlining their demands.
The party placed three key demands:
1. Implementation of reforms through a referendum and oath of the Constitutional Reform Council
2. Impeachment of the President
3. Trial for what they described as the July genocide
Meanwhile, newly elected Members of Parliament began arriving at the Parliament complex in the morning ahead of the first session.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also entered the Parliament building.
Before the session began, ruling party MPs said they were committed to fulfilling the aspirations of the people. They stated that the new parliament would work to implement the government’s promises.
Opposition MPs, however, called on BNP lawmakers to take an oath to reform the constitution. They also reiterated allegations that the President had violated his oath of office and therefore should not take part in parliamentary proceedings.
At around 11:00 am, parliamentary proceedings began following the call of President Md. Shahabuddin.
This marks the first parliamentary session since the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024.
