A local BNP leader was hacked to death in Narayanganj’s Araihazar early Wednesday over a prolonged land excavation dispute. The victim, 40-year-old Osman Gani, was the general secretary of the Brahmandi Union BNP.
The attack occurred around 1:45 am in the Kaunder Chowk area. According to police and locals, a rival group assaulted Gani due to an ongoing conflict over local earthwork and excavator operations.
Locals rescued the severely injured leader and rushed him to Jabed Ali Memorial Hospital in Araihazar. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, Gani succumbed to his injuries before reaching Dhaka.
The murder has sparked severe unrest in the area. Outraged by the killing, the victim's relatives and local BNP activists took to the streets on Thursday morning, blocking the Araihazar-Gauchia road and vandalizing several vehicles in protest. Local police have been deployed to restore order.
