The National Citizen Party (NCP), led by Convenor Nahid Islam, has officially announced an electoral alliance with Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other like-minded parties.
This strategic move aims to consolidate the "anti-hegemony movement" and ensure a unified front for the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections and the national referendum.
During a press conference at the NCP office in Dhaka on Sunday night, Nahid Islam explained that the decision to shift from contesting independently to forming an alliance was driven by the need for broader solidarity. He noted that the partnership is designed to help the party navigate electoral thresholds while maintaining the momentum of the reform and justice movements.
The announcement follows a confirmation earlier that day from Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman. The coalition, which originally consisted of eight parties, has now expanded to 10 members with the inclusion of the NCP and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Oli Ahmed.
Seat Sharing: Reports suggest an agreement has been reached regarding approximately 30 seats for the national election.
Unified Movement: Leaders emphasized that the alliance is not merely for the polls but represents a stronger, more united struggle for their core demands.
Referendum Participation: The coalition will participate in the vote on the July National Charter.
The Election Commission has scheduled the 13th parliamentary election and the referendum for February 12. With the deadline for nomination papers set for December 29, the formation of this 10-party bloc marks a significant shift in the political landscape just as the filing window closes.
