UN General Assembly Adopts Bangladesh-Sponsored Resolution on Culture of Peace

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has adopted a Bangladesh-sponsored resolution reaffirming the international community's commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity and peaceful coexistence.

The resolution, titled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace," was approved by a majority of UN member states during a General Assembly meeting on Friday (July 24).

Presenting the resolution, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, emphasized that sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity and a strong commitment to the principles of the UN Charter are essential to building peaceful, inclusive and tolerant societies.

He thanked member states for their broad support and constructive engagement throughout the negotiation process and called for stronger global efforts to promote dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict and mutual understanding over intolerance.

Originally introduced by Bangladesh in 1999, the resolution has served for nearly 25 years as a cornerstone of the UN's Culture of Peace agenda. It promotes the values of tolerance, solidarity, non-violence and respect for diversity while supporting conflict prevention, peaceful coexistence and stronger multilateral cooperation worldwide.

The adoption of the resolution underscores Bangladesh's longstanding role in advancing international initiatives aimed at fostering peace, inclusivity and global cooperation through the United Nations.
