Meta has unveiled a new Facebook Verified program designed to confirm that an account belongs to a real person, as the company steps up efforts to combat AI-generated fake profiles and online scams.
The new verification system uses a facial recognition selfie, which is compared with a user's existing Facebook profile photos. Meta says the verification process takes only a few minutes.
To qualify, users must be at least 18 years old and have an account that is in good standing under Facebook's Community Standards.
Unlike the previous Facebook verification badge, the new badge does not indicate public prominence or endorsement. Instead, it simply confirms that the account holder's identity has been verified. The feature is free and is separate from the paid Meta Verified subscription service.
Once approved, the verification badge will appear across several Facebook services, including Marketplace, Facebook Dating, and other eligible areas of the platform.
Fighting AI-Generated Scams
Meta said the new verification program is intended to help users distinguish real people from fake accounts created using generative AI.
The company noted that scammers are increasingly using AI tools to produce realistic profile photos, fabricated identities and automated messaging campaigns at scale. The verification system is designed to reduce fraud and improve trust across Facebook.
Gradual Global Rollout
The announcement was part of a broader set of product updates, including a renewed focus on immersive full-screen video experiences.
Meta said it will begin testing a redesigned Facebook interface that opens directly into a full-screen video feed for some users. Those selected for the trial will have the option to return to the traditional feed-based experience if they prefer.
The new Facebook Verified badge for identity verification will not be available for Pages or Professional Mode (ProMode) accounts.
Meta said the feature will begin rolling out Monday in selected markets before expanding to additional countries over time.
