The US State Department has approved a potential $2.1 billion sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 MSE missile interceptors and support equipment to Ukraine. Funded entirely by allied contributions from Canada, Germany, Norway and European Union loan facilities also the purchase involves no US taxpayer funds. Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal contractor.
The deal comes amid Ukraine’s urgent requests for enhanced air defenses. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently revealed that Kyiv receives an average of just 12 Patriot interceptors per month from the US is far short of the nearly 150 Russian ballistic missiles targeted at Ukrainian infrastructure monthly. Recent Russian strikes have intensified with causing heavy civilian casualties across cities like Dnipro and Kyiv.
However the delivery may take years. Because the interceptors must still be manufactured, sources indicate they might not arrive until the 2030s unless the Pentagon agrees to supply missiles from existing US stocks and backfill them later. Lockheed Martin is currently expanding production, aiming to triple PAC-3 MSE annual capacity to 2,000 units by 2030 under a multi-billion-dollar Army contract.
The sale marks a major defense supply decision for Kyiv also helping to strengthen its long-term shield against high-speed ballistic threats.
