Protesting garment workers demanding wage increases blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Gazipur on Saturday afternoon also halting traffic and leaving commuters stranded for hours.
The blockade began near the Palli Bidyut area of Chandra after midday, according to Kaliakair Police Station Chief Shahidul Islam. By late afternoon, hundreds of workers remained on the road, bringing vehicle movement to a complete standstill along the major arterial route.
The demonstration is part of a broader wave of wage protests across Gazipur’s industrial belt in recent days which has seen road blockades, worker marches and factory vandalism.
In response to the escalating tensions, authorities ordered several nearby garment factories to temporarily suspend operations to prevent further unrest as confirmed Md. Amjad Hossain, Superintendent of Gazipur Industrial Police.
Police units were deployed to the scene to negotiate with the demonstrating workers and restore order. Officers are attempting to persuade the protesters to clear the highway and restore normal traffic flow.
