U.S. forces launched extensive missile strikes across Iran on Friday after President Donald Trump vowed "major military punishment" against Tehran and its Houthi allies in Yemen. The strikes target the recent expansion of the Middle East conflict into the Red Sea also a vital global shipping chokepoint.
The escalation comes two weeks after an interim truce collapsed. In retaliation for the strikes the Iranian armed forces fired on U.S. bases in neighboring Arab countries and warned that non-military facilities housing American personnel could also be targeted.
The crisis has severely disrupted global energy routes. The Houthis control northern and western Yemen have imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia. This has forced Riyadh to divert millions of barrels of oil daily via pipelines to the Red Sea to bypass Iran’s near-total blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The five-month conflict has already stoked global inflation and fears of an economic downturn.
Meanwhile, President Trump used his Truth Social platform on Friday to warn China and Russia against arming Tehran, though he expressed confidence that both nations would abstain.
Trump stated that during a recent meeting in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him that China and its corporations would not supply weapons to Iran. Trump claimed Russian President Vladimir Putin offered similar guarantees despite the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Defending his own arms policies, Trump noted that the U.S. sells weapons to NATO countries rather than directly to Ukraine. "Therefore two major countries that people speak of often in terms of Iran are, in my opinion not participating" Trump wrote the arming Tehran would be "very bad" for Beijing and Moscow.
