Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad (Bir Bikram) has assumed the responsibilities of Acting President of Bangladesh following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin on health grounds.

Speaking at a press conference at the Parliament Secretariat Speaker Hafiz Uddin announced that President Shahabuddin submitted his signed resignation letter at 5:01 PM on Friday under Article 50(3) of the Constitution. The Speaker accepted the resignation and immediately took over presidential duties in line with Article 54.

In his resignation letter President Shahabuddin cited severe medical conditions including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney ailments and autonomic neuropathy and a neurological condition causing sudden loss of consciousness. Stating that these physical and mental complications rendered him unable to discharge his constitutional duties and Shahabuddin stepped down to pursue long-term medical treatment.

"Under the Constitution office of the President never remains vacant" Hafiz Uddin explained and clarifying that the Speaker’s oath of office inherently includes the mandate to act as President when required. He added that Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal will step in to manage parliamentary duties if the Speaker’s office becomes vacant.

Addressing ongoing public speculation, Hafiz Uddin affirmed that the decision was driven strictly by documented health reasons and making additional medical certification unnecessary. He expressed hope that this smooth constitutional transition would end all uncertainties also wishing the outgoing president a speedy recovery.

Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam and other senior parliament officials were present during the announcement.
