Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon stated today that the lottery system for student admissions, introduced by the previous government, is not a "reasonable" approach. He indicated that the admission process for the upcoming academic year will be finalized after consultations with relevant stakeholders.
The Minister made these remarks during the second day of the 13th National Parliament's first session, responding to a query from National Citizens Party (NCP) MP Hasnat Abdullah.
Minister Milon also announced an initiative to recruit 9,000 religious teachers nationwide. While the process currently faces hurdles regarding qualification standards and certificate verification, the Minister expressed optimism that these complications would be resolved soon to complete the recruitment.
He clarified that "religious education" encompasses more than just Islamic studies, emphasizing that the government is prioritizing the sentiments and teachings of all faiths.
In response to MP SM Jahangir Hossain, the Minister noted that Bangladesh currently has 57 public universities. He emphasized that the government's primary focus is improving the quality of these existing institutions. While the government remains committed to expansion, decisions to establish new public universities will be made strictly based on necessity and regional demand.
