


The government has established a specialized cell to oversee the dredging and restoration of the country’s rivers, canals, and water bodies. Mirza Abbas, Advisor to the Prime Minister, has been appointed as the president of the eight-member committee.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) confirmed the move in a notification issued on Monday, February 23. The newly formed cell is tasked with several critical functions to improve water management. Developing comprehensive strategies for dredging and re-dredging inland waterways.Streamlining ongoing projects managed by various government agencies. Reviewing excavation activities and providing technical directions to resolve operational hurdles. Launching initiatives to increase community involvement in water body preservation.
The cell operates under the Ministry of Water Resources, which will provide all necessary secretarial support. The committee has the authority to co-opt new members as required.
The 8-member committee includes. Mirza Abbas Uddin Ahmed (PM’s Advisor) .Members Secretaries from the Ministries of Land, Agriculture, Local Government, Water Resources, and Disaster Management & Relief. Technical Members Chief Engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) and the Director General of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
