BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Sunday that the reopening of offices of the banned Awami League across the country will be dealt with strictly in line with the law.
He made the remarks at a press conference at the Nayapaltan BNP central office, responding to questions from journalists about reports of Awami League offices resuming activities in different areas.
“We did not want this. Since their activities are legally prohibited, the matter will be handled according to the law everywhere,” Fakhrul said.
He also said local government elections remain a top priority for the government and assured that the polls will not be delayed. “Elections will be arranged at the appropriate time after considering legal procedures and the expiry of current terms,” he added.
Fakhrul said the BNP, under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, is working to build what he described as a “new Bangladesh.” He expressed hope that the party would emerge stronger and that the government would meet its goals.
On the issue of nominations to reserved seats for women, Fakhrul said the matter falls under parliament’s jurisdiction.
However, he noted that candidates with strong public support and party involvement would be given priority. No final decision has yet been taken on whether more than one member from the same family will be nominated, he said.
