A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale jolted Thakurgaon and surrounding northern districts on Sunday morning.
The tremor occurred at 8:34 am, with its epicenter located approximately 33 km east of the district headquarters, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 km below the surface.
While seismic tracking site Volcano Discovery initially suggested the tremors might have been too light for many to notice, local residents reported a different experience. On social media, people from Pirganj and Ranisankail upazilas described feeling a distinct, "strong" jolt that lasted for a few seconds.
"A 3.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 8:34 am, centered 331 km from Dhaka," confirmed Golam Mostafa, Meteorological Office Assistant at the BMD.
This follows a separate seismic event earlier this month on January 5, when a 5.2 magnitude earthquake centered near the Assam-Meghalaya border shook Sylhet and parts of Dhaka.
No damage or casualties have been reported following today's tremor.
