England crushed Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs and securing a dominant victory in a one-sided first Test at Headingley. The emphatic win effectively banished the shadows of their recent series defeat by New Zealand and marked Joe Root’s stylish return to the permanent captaincy.

Despite losing more than half a day's play to rain, England wrapped up the match before tea on the third day. Resuming with a 195-run overnight lead and England added 43 quick runs to declare at 409 securing a massive first-innings advantage of 238 runs.

Their pace attack then methodically dismantled the tourists. Pakistan surrendered for just 135 runs in 37.3 overs with managing to last only 1,053 balls across the entire match tying for the second-fastest win of Root’s 66-match tenure.

Josh Tongue, playing just three days after The Hundred final, took 3-43 while Ollie Robinson claimed 3-29. Both pacers ended the match with eight wickets apiece, achieving career-best Test figures. Jofra Archer supported the blitz with 3-50, finding significant pace and lift on the Headingley pitch. Mohammad Rizwan was Pakistan’s solitary bright spot also top-scoring with 41 off 39 balls.

For the second time in the match, Pakistan lost their first wicket without a run on the board when Imam-ul-Haq gloved Archer to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Wickets tumbled in quick succession thereafter compounded by Root’s sharp also proactive field placements.

In one notable instance, Root stationed himself at leg slip—a move that immediately yielded the wicket of Azan Awais. It was Root’s 219th Test catch with moving him past Australia's Steve Smith to the top of the all-time non-wicketkeeper list. Later an unconventional fielding setup saw Dan Lawrence take a diving catch at backward square leg to dismiss Saud Shakeel.

The gaping disparity between the two sides’ seam attacks with batting resilience and fielding athleticism was glaring. Pakistan will now look to regroup ahead of the second Test at Lord’s hoping for the return of captain Babar Azam from a finger injury.

Final Scorecard: England 366 for 8 (Brook 91, Cox 73, Root 66, Lawrence 51, Usman 5-92) beat Pakistan 171 (Tongue 5-46, Robinson 5-51) and 135 (Rizwan 41, Robinson 3-29, Tongue 3-43, Archer 3-50) by an innings and 103 runs.
