The Final Procession and Janaza Preparations The funeral proceedings for BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia are underway today, December 31, 2025. Her coffin, draped in the national flag, is currently in transit to Manik Mia Avenue, where her namaz-e-janaza (funeral prayer) will be held following Dhuhr prayers at approximately 2:00 pm.
Tributes at Gulshan Earlier this morning, the hearse departed from Evercare Hospital at 8:34 am. Although initially expected to be taken to her residence 'Firoza', the body was moved directly to her son Tarique Rahman’s residence (House 196) in Gulshan. Family Participation: Tarique Rahman, who recently returned from exile, was seen reciting verses from the Holy Quran alongside other family members as they paid their final respects. Political Presence: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was present at the hospital to oversee the departure.
Large-Scale Janaza Arrangements In a significant update regarding the venue, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing clarified that the funeral prayer will not be confined to the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. Instead: The coffin will be placed at the western end of Manik Mia Avenue. The congregation is expected to fill the inner and outer premises of the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) and the entire stretch of Manik Mia Avenue to accommodate the massive influx of mourners.
Stringent Security Measures A multi-layered security blanket has been thrown over the capital. The Armed Special Force (ASF), President Guard Regiment (PGR), Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Police, and RAB are coordinating to maintain order. Barbed wire barricades were used to secure the hospital vicinity during the coffin’s departure to manage the thousands of activists gathered.
Burial with State Honor Following the Janaza, Begum Khaleda Zia will be laid to eternal rest beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. The burial will conclude a day of national mourning marked by a general holiday and flags flying at half-mast.
