Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed optimism that Thailand would support Bangladesh's bid for membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during a meeting with the newly appointed Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh, Thithiporn Chirasawadi.
Prof. Yunus highlighted the interim government's initiative to secure Bangladesh's membership in the 11-member bloc, emphasizing the current effort to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner first, which he views as a crucial step connecting South and Southeast Asia.
The discussion covered strengthening relations through cooperation in trade and investment, maritime connectivity, prevention of online scams, multilateral engagement, and people-to-people exchanges.
The Thai Ambassador stated that Bangkok is keen to begin negotiations on a bilateral FTA, which is expected to boost Thai investment and expand trade with Bangladesh.
Both nations plan to launch a direct shipping route between Thailand's Ranong Port and Bangladesh's Chattogram Port. The service is anticipated to begin in March, following official talks scheduled for February.
Prof. Yunus requested the issuance of more visas for Bangladeshi nationals traveling to Thailand for medical treatment, business, education, and tourism. The meeting signifies both nations' commitment to deepening economic and strategic cooperation. SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary Lamiya Morshed was also present.
