A seven-member Canadian parliamentary delegation, led by Senator Salma Ataullahjan, met with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna today to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, particularly focusing on trade cooperation and the persistent Rohingya crisis.
Chief Adviser Yunus briefed the delegation on the nation's ongoing reforms and preparations for the upcoming February election, calling it a "historic moment." He characterised the current period as one of "significant transformation," driven by an "uprising led by young people."
Professor Yunus thanked Canada for its "steadfast support" but stressed that the "return of the Rohingya people to their homeland is the only viable solution." He highlighted the severity of the crisis, noting that 1.2 million people are displaced, thousands of children are growing up without clarity on their future or citizenship, and the community is now facing financial cuts, making the crisis "even graver."
Senator Salma Ataullahjan acknowledged the serious concern, affirmed Canada's continued commitment to the displaced community, and stated she would make a statement on the issue.
MP Sameer Zuberi noted Canada's strong interest in diversifying trade relations with Bangladesh, referencing the Canadian Prime Minister's recent Asia visit focused on expanding trade partnerships.
Discussions covered potential trade opportunities in garments, agriculture, and other sectors, emphasizing the scope for expanding Canadian investment in Bangladesh's growing export industries.
The Canadian delegation included prominent figures such as Senator Salma Ataullahjan (Head of Delegation), MP Salma Zahid, Sameer Zuberi (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities), Leaders from Global CEOs of Human Concern International (HCI), Human Concern USA (HCUSA), Gestalt Communications, and Islamic Relief Canada.
National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman and Senior Secretary on SDG Affairs Lamiya Morshed were also present at the meeting.
