Temperatures are rising, and so are cases of heatstroke. Experts warn that during heatstroke, the body loses its ability to regulate temperature. Sweating stops working effectively, and the body overheats quickly. Immediate action is critical.

What is heatstroke?
Heatstroke occurs when the body cannot control its temperature. It can rise rapidly—up to 106°F (41°C) within 10–15 minutes—and may not come down without treatment. Lack of sweating is a key danger sign. Without quick care, heatstroke can be fatal.

Causes of heatstroke

  • Prolonged exposure to high temperatures
  • Sudden exposure to a hotter climate
  • Heavy physical activity in the heat
  • Dehydration after excessive sweating
  • Tight or non-breathable clothing

Symptoms to watch for
Early recognition can save lives. Common symptoms include:

  • High body temperature
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or confusion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Red, hot, or dry skin
  • Loss of consciousness

First aid for heatstroke
Take immediate steps and seek medical help:

  • Move the person to a cool, shaded place
  • Improve airflow with a fan or open space
  • Cool the body using cold water or a damp cloth
  • Apply ice packs or cold cloths to the head, neck, armpits, and groin
  • If conscious, give small sips of water

How to prevent heatstroke

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm
  • Wear light, loose, cotton clothing
  • Use an umbrella or hat in direct sunlight
  • Avoid heavy, fried, or spicy foods
  • Take breaks if working in the heat
  • Keep indoor spaces cool with fans or ventilation
