The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv experienced a "massive" Russian drone attack on Friday morning, with explosions reported across almost every district. The assault, which is part of Russia's intensified targeting of Ukrainian infrastructure, involved missiles and drones aimed at critical infrastructure facilities and residential areas.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the severity of the attack, stating that air defense forces were operational. He reported that at least 16 people were wounded, five of whom required hospitalization, including a pregnant woman and a man in "extremely serious condition."
Numerous high-rise buildings were damaged throughout Kyiv. A fire broke out on the roof of a five-story residential building in the Solomyansky district, near the international airport.
Sections of heating networks were damaged, leaving some buildings in the northeastern Desnyansky district temporarily without heat. Authorities warned of potential disruptions to electricity and water supplies. The intensified strikes against energy infrastructure come as experts caution that Ukraine faces the risk of heating outages ahead of the winter months.
This attack unfolds amid rising pressure from Kyiv's Western allies. Recently, Canada unveiled new sanctions targeting Russia's drone and energy production. Concurrently, G7 foreign ministers called for an immediate ceasefire and reiterated their "unwavering" support for Ukraine's territorial integrity. The European Commission is also considering using frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a substantial loan for military and budgetary support.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, the conflict remains entrenched, with Moscow rejecting ceasefire calls and Russian forces continuing to press their advantage in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions.
