Typhoon Fung-wong (locally known as "Uwan") made landfall as a Super Typhoon in the eastern town of Dinalungan, Aurora province, on Sunday night, bringing fierce winds, heavy rain, and storm swells across the main island of Luzon. Residents emerged on Monday morning to begin assessing the widespread damage following a sleepless night.
The Civil Defence office reported that at least two people were killed and two others were injured during the typhoon's passage.
More than one million people were preemptively evacuated before Fung-wong made landfall, limiting the potential loss of life. The storm damaged numerous houses, particularly in Santiago city, Isabela province. Tree branches and electric posts were felled, contributing to widespread disruption and inaccessibility.
Aurora Vice-Governor Patrick Alexis Angara confirmed that at least three towns were completely inaccessible due to landslides and broken roads, requiring immediate assessment and clearing operations.
The civil aviation regulator announced that over 400 flights have been cancelled since Sunday. Fung-wong is the 21st storm to hit the Philippines this year, arriving immediately after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which caused 224 deaths in the country.
The state weather agency reported that the typhoon is currently moving over the South China Sea and is forecast to shift northeast toward Taiwan. They warned that parts of the Philippines still face heavy rains, severe winds, and storm swells in coastal areas.
