With just days remaining before the Feb. 12 national election, the race for the Khulna-6 (Paikgachha-Koyra) constituency has become a high-stakes showdown between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.
Both parties are aggressively campaigning across the coastal region, filling local markets and neighborhoods with rallies, street meetings, and door-to-door outreach. While the two parties have historically been allies, they are contesting this seat separately, creating a neck-and-neck struggle for the district's 423,331 voters.
SM Monirul Hasan Bappi (BNP): Campaigning under the sheaf of paddy symbol, Bappi is a fresh face in the region. He has focused his platform on transforming the neglected coastal towns into a "modern township" by fixing road connectivity, addressing chronic waterlogging, and building sustainable embankments to prevent river erosion.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (Jamaat-e-Islami): A seasoned member of Jamaat’s central committee, Azad is running under the scales symbol. Jamaat has won this seat twice in the past and maintains a strong organizational presence. Azad’s campaign centers on "good governance" and ending corruption, alongside promises to upgrade schools and healthcare facilities.
Khulna-6 is a critical coastal hub, and voters here say they are prioritizing disaster management and infrastructure. With 155 polling stations prepared, the outcome may hinge on which candidate can better convince the 210,461 female voters and the significant minority populations of their commitment to long-term stability.
